Panini is a classic Italian grilled sandwich that gained widespread popularity through the café culture of Milan during the 1970s. Originally created as a quick yet delicious lunch option, it soon became a staple of cafés across Europe and America. Today, panini is celebrated as one of the most iconic café-style foods worldwide.

Traditionally prepared using ciabatta or focaccia bread, panini has evolved into countless variations, including vegetarian panini, chicken panini, Mediterranean-style panini, and even sweet dessert versions. Its versatility makes it a perfect choice for kids’ lunch boxes, breakfast, afternoon snacks, brunch, or a light dinner.

Let’s explore how to make this delicious and satisfying sandwich at home.

Ingredients

  • 2 ciabatta or focaccia rolls

  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese, sliced

  • ¼ cup cheddar cheese

  • ½ cup grilled chicken (optional)

  • 4–5 tomato slices

  • 4 onion slices

  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise

  • 1 tablespoon pesto sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • Salt to taste

  • Shalimar's Chef Spices Black Pepper Powder, to taste

Method

Spread mayonnaise and pesto sauce evenly on the inside of the bread. Layer the mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, grilled chicken (if using), tomato slices, and onion slices.

Season with salt and Shalimar's Chef Spices Black Pepper Powder, then close the sandwich. Spread butter on the outer sides of the bread.

Place the sandwich in a grill press or panini maker and grill for 4–5 minutes, or until the bread turns golden and crispy and the cheese melts completely.

Serve hot and enjoy this delicious café-style panini.
