Pancakes are among the world’s oldest and most beloved breakfast foods. Variations of these soft, pan-cooked cakes have been enjoyed across Europe since the Middle Ages, where simple batters made from flour, eggs, and milk were cooked on a griddle or frying pan. Over time, pancakes became especially popular in American breakfast culture and eventually gained worldwide appeal.
Today, pancakes are available in countless varieties, including fruit pancakes, chocolate pancakes, whole wheat pancakes, and many other creative versions. Their soft texture and versatility make them a favorite for people of all ages.
Typically served with maple syrup, honey, fresh fruits, or other sweet toppings, pancakes are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a delightful snack. Easy to prepare and endlessly customizable, they remain a timeless comfort food enjoyed around the globe.
Let’s take a look at how to make this classic breakfast favorite at home.

Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour (maida)
½ cup milk
1 egg
2 tablespoons sugar
½ teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons butter or Shalimar's Sunflower Oil
¼ teaspoon vanilla essence
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ cup maple syrup, for serving
Method
In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the milk, egg, butter (or Shalimar's Sunflower Oil), and vanilla essence. Whisk until a smooth, lump-free batter is formed.
Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat and lightly grease it with butter or oil. Pour a ladleful of batter onto the pan and cook until bubbles begin to appear on the surface.
Flip the pancake and cook the other side until golden brown and fully cooked. Repeat with the remaining batter.
Stack the pancakes on a serving plate and drizzle generously with maple syrup.
Serve warm with your favorite fresh fruits for a delicious and satisfying breakfast, brunch, or sweet snack.
