The history of bruschetta dates back to the rural regions of ancient Italy, where farmers would make use of leftover bread by toasting it and topping it with olive oil, garlic, and fresh tomatoes. The name Bruschetta is derived from the Italian word “bruscare,” which means “to toast over hot coals.” What began as a simple peasant dish has evolved into one of Italy’s most beloved and iconic appetizers.

Today, bruschetta is enjoyed in a variety of forms, featuring toppings such as cheese, vegetables, olives, and even modern fusion ingredients. Its combination of crisp toasted bread and fresh, flavorful toppings makes it a versatile dish that is perfect for breakfast, snacks, brunch, or as a party starter.

Let’s find out how you can recreate this delicious Italian classic in your own kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 4 bread slices

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic

  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, grated or shredded

  • ¼ cup capsicum, finely chopped

  • ¼ cup tomato, finely chopped

  • ¼ cup onion, finely chopped

  • ¼ cup sweet corn

  • 4 tablespoons pizza sauce

  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes

  • ½ teaspoon oregano

  • Salt to taste

  • ¼ cup black olives, sliced

  • ½ teaspoon Shalimar's Chef Spices Black Pepper Powder

Method

Mix the butter and chopped garlic, then spread the mixture evenly over the bread slices. Top each slice with pizza sauce.

Sprinkle the capsicum, tomato, onion, sweet corn, and black olives evenly over the bread. Add a generous layer of mozzarella cheese, then season with Shalimar's Chef Spices Black Pepper Powder, chili flakes, oregano, and salt to taste.

Bake in a preheated oven, cook on a tawa, or use an air fryer for 5–7 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and turned slightly golden.

Serve hot as a delicious snack, party appetizer, or a perfect addition to kids’ lunch boxes.
