Tomato Rasam is a classic South Indian soup-like dish known for its light texture, vibrant flavors, and comforting aroma. Made with the tangy goodness of tomatoes and tamarind, and infused with a fragrant blend of rasam spices, this traditional preparation strikes the perfect balance between spicy, tangy, and savory notes. It can be enjoyed as a flavorful accompaniment to steamed rice or served on its own as a warming and refreshing soup. Renowned for its digestive benefits and soothing qualities, Tomato Rasam is a beloved staple of South Indian cuisine and an essential part of many traditional meals.

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe tomatoes, finely chopped

  • 1 tbsp tamarind

  • 4 cups water

  • 2 tsp rasam powder

  • ¼ tsp Shalimar's Chef Spices Turmeric Powder

  • ½ tsp Shalimar's Chef Spices Black Pepper Powder

  • Salt, to taste

  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

For the Tempering

  • 1 tsp ghee

  • ½ tsp mustard seeds

  • ½ tsp cumin seeds

  • 2 dried red chillies

  • 8–10 curry leaves

  • A pinch of Shalimar's Chef Spices Asafoetida (Hing)

Method

Soak the tamarind in warm water and extract the pulp. Strain if necessary and set aside.

In a saucepan, combine the chopped tomatoes, tamarind extract, Shalimar's Chef Spices Turmeric Powder, rasam powder, Shalimar's Chef Spices Black Pepper Powder, salt, and water. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for 10–12 minutes, allowing the tomatoes to soften and the flavors to blend together.

Once the tomatoes are tender, lightly mash them with the back of a spoon to enhance the texture and flavor of the rasam.

Meanwhile, heat the ghee in a small pan. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds and allow them to crackle. Then add the dried red chillies, curry leaves, and a pinch of Shalimar's Chef Spices Asafoetida (Hing). Sauté briefly until aromatic.

Pour the tempering into the rasam and simmer for another 2–3 minutes.

Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.

Enjoy Tomato Rasam as a comforting soup or pair it with steamed rice for an authentic South Indian meal.
