Parippu Curry

Parippu Curry is one of Kerala’s most cherished and traditional dishes, celebrated for its simplicity, nourishment, and comforting flavors. The word “Parippu” means lentils, and this classic preparation typically combines moong dal with coconut and aromatic spices to create a wholesome and satisfying curry. A staple of Kerala cuisine, Parippu Curry holds a special place in the traditional Sadya feast, where it is often served as one of the first courses alongside steamed rice and ghee.

Though mild in flavor, this dish is rich in aroma, thanks to the addition of coconut and fragrant curry leaves. Its smooth texture and delicate seasoning make it a perfect accompaniment to rice, offering both comfort and nutrition in every bite. Prepared with simple ingredients and minimal spices, Parippu Curry is not only delicious but also light, healthy, and easy to digest, making it a timeless favorite in Kerala households.



Ingredients

  • 1 cup moong dal (split yellow lentils)

  • ½ cup grated coconut

  • 2 green chillies

  • ½ tsp cumin seeds

  • ½ tsp Shalimar's Chef Spices Turmeric Powder

  • 3 cups water

  • Salt, to taste

  • 1 tbsp Shalimar's Coconut Oil

  • ½ tsp mustard seeds

  • 2 dried red chillies

  • 8–10 curry leaves


Method

Lightly dry roast the moong dal until aromatic. Rinse well and cook with Shalimar's Chef Spices Turmeric Powder and water until the lentils become soft and tender.

Meanwhile, blend the grated coconut, cumin seeds, and green chillies with a little water to form a smooth paste.

Add the coconut mixture and salt to the cooked dal. Stir well and simmer for 3–4 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine beautifully.

In a small pan, heat Shalimar's Coconut Oil and add the mustard seeds. Once they begin to crackle, add the dried red chillies and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.

Pour the aromatic tempering over the dal and mix gently.

Serve hot with steamed rice for an authentic Kerala-style meal. Mild yet flavorful, this traditional Parippu Curry is a comforting dish that showcases the simplicity and elegance of Kerala cuisine.
